Course Description

With the costs of housing, healthcare, prescriptions, and other necessities being so high, the tax credit for the elderly and disabled may prove immensely valuable to your clients. Both age and disability may not be characteristics your clients typically think about as qualifying them for a money-saving credit. You can help guide them through this credit.

This course will help you recognize when an individual qualifies for the credit, know the amounts they might qualify for, and understand how refundable and nonrefundable credits apply to the tax credit for the elderly and disabled. We will go over key forms and look at some case studies.

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Recognize when, by IRS-specific definitions, an individual qualifies for a tax credit based on being elderly or on the basis of his or her disability;
  • Recognize the different amount of credit for taxpayers who qualify under the definitions, as well as understand the rules applicable to each; and
  • Understand the difference between refundable and nonrefundable tax credits, in general, and the applicability to this particular credit.
